Lushootseed Map
Lushootseed (Puget Salish) language is one of several languages that belong to the Salish language family.  Lushootseed is spoken within the Puget Sound region and including along all of its river tributaries, the east side of Kitsap Peninsula, Whidbey Island, and the Skagit Valley.   Lushootseed is the native language of
thirteen tribes.  They are Upper Skagit, Swinomish, Tulalip, Snohomish, Sauk-Suiattle, Stillagwamish, Snoqualmie, Suquamish, Duwamish, Muckleshoot, Puyallup, Nisqually and Squaxin Island.  These tribes make up a population of over twenty thousand, but only a handful of speakers can carry on a Lushootseed conversation at adult fluency.

Lushootseed has been recognized as consisting of two dialects.  These are Northern and Southern Lushootseed, the border between them lies at approximately the Snohomish-King County line.
